Not Every Calling is Meant for You.
There was a version of that city I thought I would find.
Not the one on the maps or the brochures, but the one that hums underneath stories. The one that feels older than the buildings that hold it.
I went looking for that.
I walked streets that were supposed to remember things. I let my hands rest against walls that have stood longer than most lives ever will, waiting for something to move through them and into me.
But nothing answered.
The music was there. Loud, constant, layered over everything like it was trying to convince you this was what you came for. Buckets echoing against pavement, horns cutting through the air, voices calling for attention that never really landed anywhere.
And in between it all, people lying still in the middle of it. Day and night. As if the rhythm of the place moved around them, not with them.
It felt… off.
Not wrong. Just disconnected.
Like walking into a story that had been retold too many times by people who were never there for the beginning.
I kept searching anyway.
Through tours that promised something deeper, through rooms filled with versions of history that felt rehearsed, through spaces that should have held weight but instead felt staged.
New Orleans was supposed to feel different.
There were moments. Small ones.
A quiet stretch of street before the crowds pressed back in. A building that didn’t feel like it was performing for anyone. A corner where the air settled just enough to breathe differently.
But they didn’t stay.
And I started to realize I wasn’t missing it.
It just wasn’t there for me.
There’s a difference between a place that holds something… and a place that has learned how to sell the idea of it.
And maybe the harder truth is this
Not every place that carries magic is meant to open for you.
Sometimes you arrive ready to feel something, ready to connect, ready to step into whatever lives beneath the surface
and the surface is all that meets you back.
Not because it’s empty
but because it isn’t yours.
I think we expect certain places to meet us halfway. To confirm what we already believe about them. To give us something we can hold onto and say, this is what I came for.
But that’s not how it works.
What calls to you doesn’t always reveal itself where you expect it to.
And what doesn’t respond
is still telling you something.
So you move.
Not out of disappointment
but out of understanding.
Because the places that are meant for you
don’t need to convince you of anything.
They don’t perform.
They don’t try.
They just… open.
